Measure land area from a photo of your naksa
A phone photo plus one known length is enough to measure a plot. Here is the whole process, and the mistakes that quietly ruin the result.
You do not need survey equipment to get a usable area from a naksa. You need the drawing, one distance you can verify, and a couple of minutes. A Mero Kitta PDF is a better starting point than a phone photo, because it has no camera tilt — but a careful photo of a flat sheet still works, and that is what this page is for.
Take a good photo
- Lay the drawing flat — a curled sheet bends the boundaries.
- Shoot straight down, not at an angle. Tilt is the single biggest source of error.
- Fill the frame with the drawing and keep the whole parcel in shot.
- Even lighting, no hard shadow across the sheet.
iPhone photos save as HEIC by default. GharNaksa Naapi Plotter opens them directly, so there is no need to change your camera settings or convert anything first.
Calibrate
Calibration is the step that turns pixels into feet. Tap the two ends of a line you know, then enter its length. The critical question is what kind of length you are entering:
- On the ground — a real distance out on the land, like a 20 ft road width or a dimension printed on the naksa.
- On the paper — a ruler reading across the sheet itself. This gets multiplied by the drawing scale to reach the ground distance.
Mixing these up is the most common mistake. Entering a 27.5 cm ruler reading as a ground distance makes the whole drawing about a foot wide, and every area comes out near zero. If the result looks absurdly small, this is almost always why.
Trace the boundary
Tap each corner in order around the plot. Zoom in first — at high zoom a stray pixel is worth centimetres instead of metres. You can drag any corner to nudge it, and tap on an edge to insert a corner between two existing ones.
Check before you trust it
Look at the scale bar in the corner of the canvas. Does 20 ft look right against the drawing?
Compare one labelled edge against a dimension printed on the naksa.
If the drawing has a stated area, compare it with yours. A few percent apart is normal; a factor of ten means the calibration is wrong.
How accurate is this?
With a flat scan, a long calibration reference and careful tapping, you can land within a few percent — plenty for comparing listings, planning a build or estimating cost. It is not a legal survey, and it should never replace the Survey Department record for registration or transfer.
